In The Great Gatsby, why does Nick call Tom and Daisy careless people? The word that can sum up many of the themes in the book is position. The word encompasses themes like class, wealth, social standing, and others. Gatsby’s whole life is spent trying to attain money and status so that he can reach a certain position in life.

Nick calls them careless because they think of no one but themselves; they’re selfish. Tom and Daisy prove this by their reckless actions….. and their ability to pull away so that those actions aren’t tarnished. Rather than own up to their mistakes, Tom and Daisy simply leave town for awhile.
